A Student new to Bikram Yoga sees Amazing results - read below for one students story:
I have been practicing Bikram at the Port Orange studio for only a couple of months. I am amazed at
the benefits I am already receiving. I am a 54 year old woman with scoliosis and a history of fibromyalgia.
I dealt with the fibromyalgia for years by staying fit and taking care of myself. I had always been
extremely active and had engaged in near daily exercise since I was about 19 years old. I loved to do high
impact aerobics, lift heavy weights and jog. I thrived on exercise. One thing I never did was stretch.
I was always very inflexible and stretching hurt. I hated to do it so I didn't.
About 8 years ago I started having a problem with my left foot. After a year, I had surgery, but it only
made the problem worse. I was unable to jog. After a while, even walking became painful. Within a year,
the pain had move up my left leg and into my hip (sciatica). I could see that my left leg was turning inward.
My balance was very bad. From that point on, the pain was severe and constant.
My fibromyalgia symptoms became much worse. (... click for the full story)
I tried every different kind of exercise, but any kind of impact made the pain worse. I also started daily
stretching, but it also made my pain worse. I became depressed because I needed exercise to feel my best.
I can't count how many doctors I went to. I tried massage, chiropractic, cranio-sacral therapy, Tai Chi,
acupuncture, colonics (yes, they're awful), practically every vitamin or supplement on the market, Pilates,
dance, numerous physical therapists, swimming, you name it. I also tried yoga without the heat.
(I couldn't stand up straight for a week.)
I found Bikram through my massage therapist and fellow Bikram student, Cheryl Johnson. She is a wonderful
massage therapist and her technique, S.E.T., did help more than anything else had, but my problems persisted
because of the scoliosis. Because I had a bad experience with my introduction to yoga, I was afraid to
try again. I was also terrified of the heat. However, I decided to face my fear and give it a try. To
my amazement, the heat is exactly what my body needed in order to be stretched and strengthened. I am still
one of the most inflexible students in the classes (and maybe one of the oldest), but that's okay. I am seeing
changes that I find amazing. My sciatica pain is at least 70% better. I have packed on about 5 lbs. of muscle
(but my clothes still fit well) and I am starting to feel much stronger in my legs and feet. I am also much
calmer, I'm sleeping better than I have in decades and I have a healthier appetite. When I am in class, I can
see the imbalances in my body in the mirror and I see what I need to do to relieve pressure in the painful areas.
My body is pliable in the heat and I am able to move in ways that I find amazing. It might not look amazing to
some of the seasoned students, but it is amazing to me :) I also love the fact that I can get a cardio workout
without any impact! I BELIEVE that Bikram will heal my body. It won't happen overnight, but that's okay. It
has taken me years to get to this point and I am willing to be patient. Thank you so much, Traci, for opening
your studio in Port Orange. I am so grateful.
